My visit to Union Station Taphouse was completely unplanned. I was supposed to meet a friend for coffee after work except that the coffee shop we wanted to go to closed by 5pm so we ended up at Union Station Taphouse & Grill in the Marda Loop area. Union Station has daily specials. We happened to be there on a Friday and their special was “Wines from Around the World” at $5.95 for a 5 oz. glass. I chose to have a glass of the Banrock Station Shiraz. To my surprise, it was actually quite quaffable. We decided to share an order of their signature Truffle Potato Chips ($8). The truffle potato chips were thinly sliced potatoes that were freshly fried. They were lightly dressed with grated parmesan and finished with truffle oil. The chips came with a chipotle aioli for dipping. I was surprised at how tasty and addictive these chips were. They had the perfect texture. Instead of being crispy and near translucent like normal potato chips, they were slightly thicker and had this toothsome fluffy texture on the inside while having a crispy texture on the outside. Based on how tasty the truffle chips were, I’d like to go back to check out other food items on their menu.
I also really like the atmosphere at Union Square. We sat on the Taphouse side. Instead of being dark and dingy like many neighbourhood pubs, Union Square is very contemporary and has a lot of natural light. There are also lots of TVs all around so it would be a nice place to go and watch a game.
