The Regal Beagle has been my go to place for salt & pepper wings ever since I tried them for the first time at the Big Rock Eddies back in 2003. I used to be a regular at the Regal Beagle Centre Street location for Wing Nights when it was still around. Some nights they would open up the basement and we would sit on the retro couches and chairs having our wings and beer. It had the feel of a rec room in someone’s basement. For the past couple of years, there have been two Regal Beagle locations in Calgary – one on 14 Street NW and one off Macleod Trail in the south. It appears a third location has opened recently on 36 Street NE. The Wing Nights at the Regal Beagle are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays where the wings are 25 cents but there’s a rule that you can only order 10 wings with each beverage purchase. This rule has never been an issue for me as I find 10 wings to be the perfect amount for me at one sitting. I’d rather try to go more often rather than overindulge at one sitting.
The Salt & Pepper wings at the Regal Beagle has been the favourite for me. They also offer other flavours such as Teriyaki, BBQ, Honey Garlic, Hot, and Beagle. What has impressed me most is that their wings are always plump and meaty. For the most part, their wings are pretty consistent. The Salt & Pepper are usually well-seasoned with a nice crispy coating on the outside while the meat is tender and juicy on the inside. This recent visit to the 14 Street NW location was no exception. What I like about the Salt & Pepper version from the Regal Beagle is the seasoning adheres well to the wings and doesn’t fall off like the ones from other places. These wings tasted as good as I remembered them to be, as it had been a while since I’d been to the Regal Beagle for wings.
Since it was a Saturday evening this time when we went and there were no major sports games on, the pub was pretty quiet. The service was prompt and efficient. We got our drinks and food in no time. After this visit, I’d still have to say the Regal Beagle remains my favourite place for salt & pepper wings.
