Grumans Catering and Delicatessen – Calgary, AB

I finally got a chance to check out Grumans Deli for lunch last month. Grumans is located in the same building as Tourism Calgary on 11th Avenue SE, just across the street from the Keynote Building in the Beltline area. Grumans serves up classic Jewish-inspired (it’s not kosher) deli fare such as matzo ball soup, karnatzel (spicy beef sausages), chopped chicken liver, potato latkes and knishes, as well as Montreal Smoked Meat sandwiches and kosher all-beef hot dogs. Grumans reopened at this spot earlier last year. The first incarnation had been located in the west end of downtown and at some point had been relocated to the Atlalink building in the northeast.

I took my friend’s recommendation and ordered the Grumans Reuben ($13), which consisted of smoked meat, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing on toasted rye bread. The sandwich came with slaw and a choice of potato salad or French fries. I chose the potato salad. The sandwich itself was quite tasty although there was a bit too much Russian dressing for my liking on this visit. I felt that I couldn’t really taste all the distinct flavours as all I was tasting was the dressing bite after bite.  The slaw was alright but not particularly memorable. I appreciated that at least it was a vinegar-based slaw instead of the creamy version. The potato salad was rather pedestrian and it was a bit on the bland for my liking. Overall though, it was a well-made sandwich and I would go back to have it again. I’d probably skip the potato salad and go for fries instead next time.

We also shared a side of Kosher Style Pickles ($1.50). The pickles were quite tasty although a bit on the salty side.

Grumans is actually a nice option for satisfying your Montreal Smoked Meat cravings in the downtown area. They are open for brunch on the weekends. One item on their brunch menu that has really caught my eye is their Smoked & Poached Breakfast Poutine, which consists of Montreal Smoked Meat, cheese curds, poached eggs, hashbrowns topped with a lemon Hollandaise. That sounds like the ultimate breakfast plate. This is definitely on my list of items to try for the upcoming year.
