Lovely Sweets & Restaurant – Calgary, AB

Since my coworkers and I happen to be up in the Northeast for a meeting one day a couple of weeks ago, we decided to head to Lovely Sweets & Restaurant for lunch. Lovely Sweets & Restaurant is located in a strip mall in the far northeast neighbourhood of Westwinds. The set up for Lovely Sweets & Restaurant is unique in that it is both a bakery for Indian sweets as well as a restaurant. We had to enter through the bakery to get to the restaurant portion.

Since there were five of us, we started off with three orders of the Vegetable Samosas ($4.99 per order). Each order contained 2 deep-fried vegetarian samosas that were filled with potatoes, peas, and spices.  The samosas were topped with a chickpea curry. This actually caught me by surprise as I was expecting only the crispy samosas without the chickpea curry topping. The samosas were delicious and very filling. I liked that the pastry for the samosa was flaky and light.

Our first dish was the Dal Makhani ($8.99). It was a combination of black lentils from India cooked in various spices with rich cream and butter. This was my first time trying this dish and I enjoyed the flavours a lot. Normally, I’m not a huge fan of lentils but they were really tasty in this dish and I would definitely order this dish again on my next visit.

Next up was the Butter Chicken ($10.99), which consisted of tender boneless chicken pieces cooked in a light tomato based sauce with spices and butter cream. I can easily say this was one of the best versions of Butter Chicken that I’ve had in Calgary. Lately, I have not been fan of butter chicken at various restaurants as I often find that it has been too sweet and too rich. However, this version had a complexity of flavours from the spices that made it really addictive. I was really impressed with this dish and I can’t wait to go back to Lovely’s to have it again.

Our last dish was the Aloo Gobi ($8.99). This dish consisted of fresh cauliflower and potatoes cooked in Indian spices and tossed with tomatoes and fresh coriander leaves. I liked that the cauliflower was perfectly toothsome and not mushy at all. Overall, the dish was very flavourful and delicious. This was definitely one of the better versions of Aloo Gobi that I’ve had.

We got a couple orders of plain Naan ($1.25 each) to sop of the sauces from our other dishes. The plain Naan at Lovely Sweets is definitely one of the better versions of naan that I’ve had in Calgary. It was crispy on the outside but light and airy on the inside. I was impressed that wasn’t doughy and dense at all.

Though my coworkers and I were a little surprised by how small the portions sizes of the main dishes were, we were all impressed with the quality and taste of the food. If it wasn’t so far away, we’d definitely be back more often.
